Disney 2009!!!

We did it! We survived. It was a good week. We had the free dining plan - so we ate really well. My dh is extremely fanatical about his Disney vacation - and had charts and itineraries printed on waterproof paper so they wouldn't get ruined in the rain or near his sweat. And sweat we did. It was so hot and humid - it became unbearable at times. Fortunately, we had many indoor activities to avoid the heat.

Oh, did I enjoy meeting the UP characters. I found someone on ebay that sold the soda pop pins and bought enough for our entire crowd to wear. Eating at the Brown Derby was a wonderful experience and I hope we can repeat it sometime. Meeting the Mad Hatter was a great experience - he was a hoot.

Overall, it was tiring and hot - but as usual, really fun. It was a bit disappointing to feel the cutbacks Disney has started. We saw it coming with the Dining Plan changes . . . but we really felt it in other ways too. The quality of the crowd wasn't the best our first two days (a Sat and Sun) but it improved on Monday.

I am one proud grandma. We saw the 4D ultrasound yesterday of our little girl. It was such a treat. She is one happy, smiling, and limber baby! She had her feet and hands in front of her face the entire time we were there and she just kept grinning! She really favors her daddy in looks - we are soooo anxious to hold her!! She is due Thanksgiving . . .

A new laundry room

When we moved into this new house - we were surprised to see a closet in the garage - sitting too high to utilize and without a step. It was supposed to be a place for the water heater, but this house has a basement, so it was installed down there instead. So, we asked, can't we eliminate the closet and enlarge the laundry room on the other side? And we did! It doubled the size of the laundry room and my husband even let me have some beadboard in there to dress it up a little. This room is off the kitchen, so it is handy! I LOVE having a utility sink! My first!

Here we are in mid-process. The beadboard is up and painted and the sink and the floor is patched. You can tell by the wall marks where the old wall was and also the YUCKY wire shelf. Yuck.

I used a jadite green color for the walls, Greg hung a cool light fixture with the jadite trim. I am really happy with the results - now, for the next room . . .

Wow. Summer has come and gone. We had such an awesome dance recital. The Brady's had another reunion - the 50's theme was wonderful. My son-in-law was deployed to Afghanistan. My daughter is pregnant with our first grandchild, a little girl! We moved. Such simple little words. Such a simple little statement. OH MY the work behind them. We searched and searched for a new house to fit the baby and my daughter coming back home - and possibly my son-in-law in the future. Oh, and let's not forget the other new contribution to all of this, a dog. Yes. I have gone berserk, mad, crazy. It's all good though, getting better each day. I think. So, here we are in the new house. I have already completely modified one room, but alas, my photo equipment is still packed and I cannot show you pictures. In one of those boxes. The million boxes, unlabeled, unorganized, I am gonna cry . . . boxes.

So let's talk about somethings that are really happy. Disney. Well, I like parties. Planning them. Being a part of the fun. So, we did a party thing this past Sunday - and this photo card works on this laptop so I can show you a picture! Yeah! I like graphics so it was great fun designing us matching shirts. Again, we are counting down . . . see the Mickey Mouse bank above? It is dated 1968 on the bottom. Found it new, still wrapped in cellophane at a consignment store. The bubble gum was a bit yuck, but the machine is so retro cool.

This week we are going to see our little grand baby in 4D - it will be awesome. And I am having fun helping with the decorating, planning of all things girl baby!

My daughter is on point now. Meaning she gets to wear expensive, uncomfortable shoes. It is yet another step to show she is maturing. We started her in ballet at 3 years old. So many recitals and classes later. She won't wear point shoes in next week's recital, but . . . next year she will. Wow. This is bigger than anything her momma has ever done, and I am happy for her.

Tea Party

Why is it always so hard for me to believe another year is gone? We had a wonderful year doing Life of Faith. The girls attended monthly meetings - and they were such meaningful meetings. At each meeting our leader, Karla, helped the girls do a skit from the books, gave a devotional, made an adorable craft and provided a fun snack. Yes, that was a lot, and she did it all. Our last meeting of the year was to have a tea party - and tea we did. There is a little place in Dacula called Blessings Cottage - they provided the fun tea and yummy food. It was a nice memory and conclusion to a some good memories. Thank you Karla and Emma!

The Beggar's Blessing - Dance Recital 09

Hard to believe another recital is almost here! Last year my dd was honored to play the lead role, and this year she is in drama with her best friend as the lead role. I am helping with sets and props and it has been very time consuming getting it together - but we are so close to being finished, it is wonderful and exciting. The set pieces are designed to rotate - one side shows a woodcarver's shop, the other is inside the home of the lead character. You can see my dh on top of one of the sections working away. He is so helpful.

A project or two

I thought I was getting better at this, but alas, it was a lie. Walk away from anything that says "project". It really means sit in the basement for years making me feel guilty. I blame it entirely on Tracey for constantly being inspiring and doing all these cool things with tired pieces of furniture. Plus, I have always wanted one of these old Aunt Bea kitchen cupboards. My mom has one full of her pretty green depression glass. I always hoped she'd get tired of it and give it to me, but it doesn't seem to be happening. (And I enjoy seeing it at her house.) So anyway, browsing around Craigslist I saw this . . . I think there are 4 layers of paint on it, and the last one is pretty bad, do you think the camo look was to hide its ugliness? I dunno. I was originally thinking of just sanding it and giving it a new coat of paint, but after examining it closely today, it is going to need a more serious bit of work, stripping. I also bought from the same gal, this boudoir chair - it looks like it has seen better days. I want to paint it white and put some really soft rich silk velvet fabric on it and use it for my vanity chair. Just a little project. Crazy. OK, stupid.

You know how you look at something in a magazine and you just say "wow! that would be perfect for me!" Well, this is it. This is my dream work/craft room. It is really a sewing room - but, it could be for scrapbooking and all other forms of crafting. And these pin cushions. Is that clever or what? She used old hankies and vintage fabric to cover tomato pin cushions and strawberries. Pure genius!

The annual Brady Family Reunion is quickly approaching. My parents are the hosts this year and they decided on a 50's theme. Fun. My sister and I were given the job of organizing the lunch get together. We are trying to find something creative to decorate the tables. My sister once bought an adorable LP bowl - a melted and shaped record. Last night I gave it a try and they turned out very cute. Won't the pink tablecloths look great with the LP bowls of peanuts?

I don't want to be boring and repeat everything that I put on my dd's blog - you can go there to see all the pictures and details about what we did and saw. I am STILL coveting the rose velvet corsage that Evy (pictured above with my dd) had at her booth. Ruth says don't fret it . . . I will get one, but patience isn't one of my virtues, Evy said those machines are affordable . . . I think it is time to start saving money.

On to other things. A huge congratulations goes out to my niece Emily and her husband Caleb - they are proud parents of a sweet little baby boy, Jack. They made me a great-aunt. Is that possible? My sister a grandmother? hmmm. All our love to this sweet new family. Babies are pure pleasure and special gifts from heaven.

Snow!

Finally! Snow! We had to wait until all the little buds began to show up on trees to get it . . . but it finally came. While we were at church this morning we watched the rain turn to snow, big fluffy snowflakes. So purrty. There is actually some accumulation. Wow. I know what you northerners are thinking, I was once a northerner too. But we haven't seen hardly any snow in two years, so it was a /bit/ exciting today. Church was even cancelled tonight! Wow. (That's a Mickey Mouse snowperson.)

So we had our Disney party today with the "R" family cause we are getting all pumped up about our trip. I am not going to tell you how far away it is because that too will seem crazy. We are crazy. No doubt. We celebrated with a Pop Century Tye-Dyed Cheesecake. It was a funky cake. I wasn't hugely impressed with the taste, the cake seemed too dry. I made us new countdown calendars and keyring reminders. Let the fun begin.

Just thinking aloud here, well . . . typing my thoughts. Yesterday we visited two malls - they were so packed with people it felt like Christmas. The restaurants had lines, the stores were amazingly full and people were spending . . . is the economy really hurting? Really? Then, a couple of days ago, our college class cabin was broken into - it's a small house on the church property, labeled "The Cabin" of NMFBC. Someone came in and stole the few things we had, an X-Box game, TV, VCR, couches, lamps, chairs, washing machine and dryer, all the snacks and drinks and paper goods. We are sad of course, it seemed strange this morning in Sunday School without our lights or comfortable seating. (Bathroom had no mirror or TP.) Hopefully the desperate persons that did this thing will get what they need out of the items. It just makes you want to stop . . . and reflect on the world . . . and its need of the only real help, the Savior.

I don't know if this will make an impact on Washington or not. It is a wonderful attempt though. I plan to purchase a big pack of red envelopes and send them on March 31. It is so devastating how our new president is determined to rid the world - not just the US - and at the taxpayer's expense - of unborn babies. Sweet, tiny, precious babies. I don't understand it, can't comprehend it. Something so defenseless - given no chance. I have family members, I am an individual - that would welcome adoption. I'd rather my tax money was used to support good adoptions . . . click on the red envelope above to get more information. Make a statement with me.

On a positive note . . . "North Dakota's House of Representatives has passed a bill effectively outlawing abortion. The House voted 51-41 this afternoon to declare that a fertilized egg has all the rights of any person. That means a fetus could not be legally aborted without the procedure being considered murder." Praise the Lord.

Our dance studio is seeing our young teachers marrying off quickly. They are so happy and we are happy for them - as long as they stick around! :) We celebrated another upcoming marriage with a shower and just look at this beautiful tiered cupcake treat that was put together by one of the moms at the studio. Isn't it stunning? She actually figured out how to make the tiers wrapping paper around the separators . . . amazing and YUMMY!! Makes me want to bake . . .

I didn't want to believe it. I refused to believe it. But it is true. My favorite magazine for all these years . . . is no longer. Home Companion is unable to continue due to lack of advertisers. As Mary E. says "it's a vicious circle - housing is bad, companies can't advertise, magazines can't print." Soooo sad. I will hold onto my old copies even tighter! If the economy improves . . . Mary says Home Companion will be back . . . I hope so!!

My buddy and friend, Stephanie, (aka Incredimom), wanted to change up the looks of her kitchen. (Another Lucy Ricardo like idea . . . )

She picked this gorgeous color. We had great fun painting her 2 toned blue walls into one tone of Shenandoah Valley by Glidden.

She has a stained chair rail going around her eat in area and it was light blue on the top and darker blue on the bottom - now it is a calming happy green. We brightened the room by putting up white sailcloth balloon shades with ties - the colors work so well with her new countertop, stone backsplash and tile floor. Just beautiful. We were a little happy with ourselves because we accomplished the entire project while our hubbies went to an overnight convention. We had some serious help from her parents - they delivered great food to the hungry workers and lots of moral support. What a blessing to have friends to share work, play and good times. (Another Lucy scheme with a happy ending . . . luv ya Steph!)

Well, see, my dear husband, my dh, said we are going back to Disney this year - in 2009. I decided this calls for desperate measures . . . I managed a trip to New York, wore a sandwich board and tried to raise the needed funds. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.

Another sewing lesson. She is loving every minute of it! She loves the machine, even though it is so old and noisy. It is a brand new machine, given to me about 12 years ago. It was stored uncovered in our garage the entire 12 years and in another garage probably 12 years more. There is no manual. I took it to the sewing machine service place and they wanted $60 to tune it up. Do I want to spend $60 now, probably more later because he said things will probably start to freeze up and have no manual, or just start fresh and invest in a new one? I talked to several people, I looked at sooo many machines and finally decided on this . . . praying it was the right choice!!! It's a Kenmore with a few extras than the basic to give dd room to grow.

Valentine's Day. Another holiday. Already. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE holidays. Love, love, love them. Especially ones that include lots of chocolate. But, you barely put away one and there is another one. I read these wonderful blogs of women that create and beautify their homes continually and I am boring enough to just want to stop and enjoy something beautiful for a LONG time. There are still Christmas items sitting on my kitchen counter because I hate the idea of putting them in storage - they are so sweet and they make me smile. A long time ago a friend gave me a plug in bubble snowman light. I simply adore it. It will go away the next time company comes - but until then, it's Christmas in my kitchen and heart. OK, so back to Valentine's Day. After Christmas deals are so fun to me especially when I find an item that isn't all Christmas and I can enjoy it all year. Well, I found these two items, 80% off at Hobby Lobby, that fall into that category - but they look more like the love day than Christmas anyway. The tray is pink pink and the plastic bowl with it's striped plastic ribbon - are just happy. (It'd help if there weren't candy canes in it, huh?) I do enjoy pulling out my collection of vintage valentine's cards. I bought a huge stack from ebay (a seller worth watching!) and when they were finally perfectly arranged and the glass placed, it cracked putting it in the frame. (hey, you can't even see it in the picture. cool.) No matter - until I find another frame it stays and it is still adored.

Did you notice, hmmm? I did change my header for Valentine's Day! That took some work too - it doesn't matchie matchie the rest of the blog, but it is a nice change for a change. (I may need to buy a Thesaurus to sound and look more intelligent.)

Learning something new

My little girl likes to do crafts. Even more so than her momma. She wants to sew and knit and do stuff I am not good at and try to avoid. A good friend, and an especially crafty person, Ruth, saw my dd's interest and wanted to fill that void for me. Is that a good friend or what? (I am doubly blessed, another friend's husband teachs my dd science!!!) Today was the first lesson - and they accomplished a lot! In anticipation of today, we wanted to give Ruth a little token of our appreciation - so we altered/personalized this composition notebook and gave it to Ruth. It was fun bouncing ideas off each other until we got it just like we wanted it! This is our second combined effort - she gave her sister one for a Christmas gift.

Ruth just sent some pictures she took of the first lesson . . . isn't this sweet? If only we were so eager to learn other things (i.e. Math, English) . . . Thanks Ruth!!!

A wedding . . . !?

YES! A Christmas wedding. My 23 yr. old dd and her man decided on a Christmas wedding - in 2008, not 2009. So, we put everything into high gear for three weeks. She was beautiful - and they are happy! My amazing mother-in-law baked the cakes for the reception and became 1/2 of my brain planning and implementing all the details. Friends were so supportive and available.(hugs Ruth & Stephanie) . . . My dad and sister did all the video and pictures . . . It came together nicely . . . and I only cried once during the ceremony. If you don't watch the father & bride dance or listen too closely to speeches, it helps. Do that later when you watch the video. Can't cry, can't cry! (Have you listened to Cinderella by Steven Curtis Chapman? I put it on my playlist for you to check out.) If you are wanting to see more . . . there is plenty more on my dad's website. We had fun with the favors - while on our last trip to NJ we stopped at Cabella's (had to do a shopping stop my dh enjoys) and I saw these huge beautiful homemade candy canes. Well, when we started discussing the wedding the candy canes came to mind and we ordered them for favors. It made a beautiful tree.

But before we start into this year . . . let me share a little more about 2008. It went out with a bang! What wonderful, sweet memories were made at Disney World with the R family - 9 days packed to the very maximum and tons of great food using the dining plan . . . humm, a Dole Whip sounds good right now.

There is always a party with the R family - and they kept my dh in the party mood by buying him this enormous hat - which he proudly wore most of the week! He was easily spotted in every crowd.

Can you believe they let me drive the monorail? Me neither.

We counted down . . . we party'd frequently . . . we planned every detail . . . we shared every moment. What a marvelous trip. Personally, it isn't a "vacation" - cause Disney is work, a little stress and requires a lot of physical stamina. But it was a memory filled, exciting and altogether lovely time.

Life of Faith

A friend in our homeschool group started a Life of Faith Girl's club and invited my dd to attend. The memories came flooding back. Fifteen years ago, Little Bear (Richard) Wheeler told me about the Martha Finley books written about Elsie Dinsmore. At the time he was busily trying to reprint the series originally written in the late 1800's. So, I purchased a couple of the books and became very involved in the story line. Not being able to wait until they printed more of the books, I made a call to an antique book store in the area and asked if they had any of the original books. Um yes, they did, the entire series, most of them first printings! Wow. I ran to that store and bought the entire 28 volumes. It didn't take me long to read all of them either. My oldest dd didn't enjoy the books as much as I did but now, my youngest loves them and it is wonderful to share the books with her. The books were reprinted again with modern language and with dolls to enjoy! My dd has decided to spend her saved Disney money on an Elsie doll. I think it is a wise purchase, a constant reminder of the great character qualities Elsie demonstrates throughout the books. What fun this monthly club will be for both of us!

What a breath of fresh air! I wasn't excited about this election, matter of fact, I was depressed about it. So much of the same ole' same ole'. When John McCain chose a woman for his vp running mate - I thought it was over for sure, until I heard her. She is the new voice we need. She is the woman that will get it done and do it right. Watching the convention this week made me think the rest of the country and even John McCain is also re-energized about this election. God bless Sarah Palin! I can't wait to vote in November.

Big word. Lots of meaning, feelings, memories - it evokes many different things. Some families are really close. They love to be together, to play together, to share some laughs, joys, problems. It is a blessing to be a part of such a family; to recognize the genuineness, the gift, the complete feeling you get being a part of it all. My dd asks, "so - if so and so is your cousin, that makes his daughter my 2nd cousin, right?" I don't know! But aren't you glad you know them? Aren't you glad you are related to them in some way? Aren't you glad you had this opportunity to make fun memories with them? I am a blessed person. I have been doubly blessed - my husband's family is close and we keep in touch and share lots of memories. But what my aunt and uncle (my dad's sister) started 30 years ago and was continued this past weekend, is amazing. (and I have the t-shirt to prove it.) It is called a family reunion but it is so much bigger than that. When family comes from all over the US to meet in a central location, spends money on gas, food and lodging to stay DAYS at a motel - that is rare, yes? It is special, unique - it is huge. Thank you Bradys for being my family. I love all of you.

MLP Beauty Shop

My best little friend and constant companion is not with me - and she is missed. My dd is with her grandparents this week and momma is lonely without her. Before she left she spent hours beautifying all of her My Little Pony's tresses - it looked like a regular beauty shop - and they all very patiently waited their turn. Some are still sporting curlers waiting for the great reveal. These ponies are usually stacked in pink wicker baskets on the shelves - but we didn't have the heart to mess up their new looks and so dd displayed them so carefully on the shelves. Had to take pictures to remember the love, time and patience she put into her little toys.

Dreams that seem so real!

Last night I attended our college & career Wednesday Bible Study - they meet at 8 pm and go pretty late, and with an 11 yr old at home, I don't usually get to go. They are going through the Tommy Nelson Daniel DVD Bible study. It was an awesome lesson on the prophecy given to Daniel in chapter 9 regarding the 490 years. As a Christian, it gives us the validity of God's Word, the accuracy and the occurrence of this prophecy is amazing. My main observation was Daniel's role, having a first name basis with an angel from God, trusted with an important message to be given to future generations. Amazing stuff. Anyway, this was all heavily on my mind when I went to sleep and during the night I had a vivid dream where the heavens opened and Jesus was there taking me home. Exciting it is.

Haven't mentioned much on the renovation lately - it is slowly coming along. We actually did some work in the master bath so I feel like I am holding up many spinning plates, maybe too many. :) While in NJ I stopped at a thrift store and found some beautiful things - a crystal cake plate that now holds the towels in the down bath and an old teapot - repurposing again - and loving it!

So, a new issue is the cabinets - they need new paint desperately. The 20 year old oil based paint is almost yellow now. I purchased this pretty Charleston color from Sherwin Williams - it is a much brighter white than we had! I also painted the brass drawer pulls - trying to update the whole look. Any thoughts?

Field Trip

What does a homeschool family do with an unexpected business trip? Field trip! My dh had two business trips in a row and we went with him on the second one to NJ. We used the opportunity to stop at many different places along the way. New York City Times Square was a must on the list - and dd loved it! Especially the huge 3 story Toys R Us!

We stopped in D.C. and saw the monuments and the Air and Space Smithsonian Museum.

We went through Philadelphia and visited Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell - and got a parking ticket. We consider it a donation to the historic city. :)

While my dh was doing work in NJ - dd and I went over to the Atlantic Ocean and enjoyed several hours of beach fun.
On the way home dh wanted to go by his Alma mater - UNC in Chapel Hill. We drove by our first two homes as a married couple - and glad to say little had changed in 20+ years! Also glad we didn't stay on there for grad school - how different our lives might be today. It was a whirlwind and exciting trip.

Renewed like the eagle

Today our pastor preached an awesome message on this familiar psalm. He told about the eagle and how after it has aged it slows down, its beak becomes weak, its talons are no longer sharp and it loses its feathers making it noisy and difficult to sneak up on its prey. The eagle then goes off by itself and molts, pecks off its beak and tears its claws on the rocks. In time, new feathers, beak and talons grow in, stronger - renewed. Dr. Cox shared that other eagles, ones that had gone through the same thing, bring food to the healing eagle. What an awesome illustration of God's work in our lives and the opportunity we have to use our past experiences to help others.

Renovation update

Most of the hard work is done - except - the - toilet. That has developed into a huge problem. I asked my dd if she would mind just using that hole in the ground and she gave me the most horrified look. It's still nicer than an outhouse! Anyway, I helped my dh carry a 2000 pound (well, maybe not that heavy) toilet up the sidewalk, the porch, the stairs and down the hall. He opened the box to install it the other night and . . . it was broken. He held up a piece of porcelain for me to see. The whining started. You mean I (oh and the attitude too . . . who cares about him, he is supposed to do this stuff) have to carry this thing back to the car and then carry another one back up here!!! It was not pretty to listen to or see. (great example mom and helpmeet, NOT!) My sweetie drug that heavy thing down the stairs by his sweet self. Half the work of half the work is partially done. (stop whining now) Anyway - see? there is progress in this room. More pictures ~~if it ever gets done~~ when it is put together.

The "R" family came over to celebrate a milestone in our countdown to Disney vacation. It really makes a big difference to have friends share your excitement and joy in an upcoming event. There is this constant battle going on in my mind when it comes to purging my home of stuff . . . "what if I need this later?" "wouldn't this be so cute used like this?" "why are you storing this?" Yes, I have problems. My arguments with myself are quite intense. It is usually punctuated by eating chocolate. Good example: Pulling stuff out to put on Ebay today, stuff purchased specifically for Ebay . . . and the dilemma starts. Found this wonderful large Longaberger desk set with the separators and clear plastic liner for a great price - purchased to sell. While taking pictures of the thing, I am thinking, "oh that would be perfect to store my files in, or bits of folded cloth, and it is my favorite retired stain. This would cost me almost $100 to replace." And, not sure who won, but the thing is sitting on my desk with stuff in it. Sad, pathetic story, I know. Well, I did manage to get 3 things up. It takes me forever to list an auction, usually because I am afraid I will forget some important detail to put in the listing. I will admit my shipping prices are on the high side, but it takes me so much time to photograph, list and ship items, I try to recoup that and the unbelievable fees Paypal and Ebay get nowadays. It is really kind of pointless to list anything under $10 now - used to be no biggie to list little things. Hopefully this coming week there will be many more things up and our family budget will be replenished a little.

Oh, and speaking of renovation . . . there is a toilet in our front yard right now. (Could fill it with dirt and flowers . . . ) Yes, another unexpected expense to this project. The old one said, "no way, I am done," as it leaked blue junk all over my new grout and tile. And the mirrors took more of the wall with them than they were supposed to and it is becoming a horror of an ordeal trying to replaster the gaping holes. Ready to see this project come to a sweet end. Did I mention that I LOVE the glass tile? It is so rich rich rich. Every house needs some -glass -tile -somewhere in it. Hey Mom . . .

Well, I can't stand it. I have to share a peek. The glass tiles are the prettiest things . . . there is no grout in yet and they won't let me stand on the new floor - but it is coming together very nicely. The picture of the sink is from the downstairs bath - can you make out the blue paint under the tile? That is the color I bought for the walls in that bathroom, any thoughts? While at Home Depot I picked out a more gray color (yes dad, battleship gray!) and not sure if that would be better than this blue/gray. My dd wants the upstairs bath to have an Eiffel Tower/French soft pink look - hmmm. (why does the faucet look gold in this pic? it is brushed nickel)

Decided to do some renovation on the bathrooms - they are all in pretty bad shape. This is the downstairs bathroom before - right now it has a new countertop and no mirror - but it is getting there!

Upstairs bath - before . . . you don't want to see it right now! Floor is gone, mirror is gone, wall is cut into, no drywall around tub - it looks bad!! Gotta look bad before it looks good. So far we have added a new tub and countertop. I'll share more as the work goes on.

My in-laws are really cool people. They went to Aurora, NC to dig through piles of sand for . . . shark's teeth! My FIL has an impressive collection of shark's teeth and he found a big assortment this trip. They did a thoughtful and generous thing - they brought home each family a bag of this special sand so we could have our own dig! We spread the paper out a few nights ago and found some very small teeth - it was fun! Thanks Grampy!

My sister and niece came to the recital and stayed the week with us. What a week it has been! We bought Atlanta City Passes and we got it all in except the zoo - which is still to come! We went to the Aquarium, Coke museum, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, CNN and the High Museum of Art. They were all wonderful! We even got in a trip to IKEA. My sister and I are doing the Archivers scrapbook night this weekend. Incredimom blessed me with a gift certificate - she knows me well. It was a blessing my sister is here this week, it would have been a hard week emotionally after the huge weekend. I was very emotional through the finales - and my poor dd was extremely emotional the first 24 hours - it is a big fall from the high you get when you plan and work on something for months and then . . . it is over.

A trip to France

My oldest dd is far away - far, far away. She has gone with her college class to France to visit European businesses. She seems happy and having fun! What a lifetime experience! On the bottom picture, she is the last one on the right in the front row. On their studies abroad blog she stated she is having a hard time with the "different" shower stalls - soaking the entire bathroom. I'm sure she'll have it figured out before the trip is over. Looking around Etsy, this pretty thing called my name - and I love it! It weighs nothing on my wrist and it makes me so happy!
My friend, Vivian, called this morning to ask if I wanted to go to a pre-garage sale her friend was having. I AM THERE! This friend was selling her mother's things and she had some beautiful things. She had a vintage typewriter that was begging to come home with me - so I called my mom and sure enough, it will be admired at her house!

I am so excited about the 9 glass-topped Ball jars I brought home, they will be fun to fill in my scrapbooking room! One item that caught my attention was the wood bowl, she said her grandmother made biscuits in that bowl. My great-grandmother had a wooden biscuit bowl too. The one I bought today still has biscuit dough stuck to the sides - talk about things telling stories. The old Big Ben wind-up clock reminded me so strongly of my dad's parents, it became an emotional moment holding it. Now it sits in my guest room - a constant reminder of them. How cool to find a whole box of 1965 Coca-Cola matchbook reproductions - repros that are 43 years old? Fun. It has been a stressful week getting ready for the big recital this coming weekend. What a nice and much needed break!

I woke up with my stomach in knots! You'd think I was the one flying to France, you'd think I was the one performing in front of hundreds of people! No, it is my daughters! And they are cool as cucumbers but mom is a basket case. My oldest dd is flying out of the country today for 10 days in Europe! My youngest dd performs 2 dances and a major drama role in her recital this coming weekend. All I really have to do is be supportive, calm and collected. NOT! Somehow the role of props chairman became mine - how do you manage to put props out and also help your daughter with her hair, makeup and costumes? Plus, pictures! I want pictures! Calm. Cool. Collected. Smile.

Curriculum Fair!

Adjectives that describe a homeschool curriculum fair: Exhilarating, exciting, fun, frustrating, entertaining, tiring, overwhelming, exasperating, thrilling, awesome, difficult, super, tremendous - yes, overall, it was tremendous! My feet and back are hurting, but it is a good feeling to have all the curriculum purchased for next year and exciting to think about what the year holds. We worked the used book sale so we could shop early and we sold a box of stuff that paid for over half of our purchases. It is all good.

OK, this- was- exciting. Steve Demme, the man behind Math-U-See was there! My dd watches his videos with her curriculum and she laughs and enjoys his lessons so much - it was pretty cool to see him in person. He gave her a $5 Turkey paper bill, he had just been there teaching missionary homeschool families! He was a joy to talk to - an unexpected great memory of the day. My oldest dd used his math all through elementary school and jr. high and was able to skip Algebra I and advance to Geometry her freshman year of high school and first year in a private school! Needless to say, I am loyal to MUS!

A promise

The other day I had an opportunity to go through an antique mall. I hadn't taken more than 10 steps into the mall when I saw this little jewel, a 1935 Royal Typewriter. And at a very good price! It had its original case and still works! I absolutely love, I know - straaange, old typewriter keys. When I see them on bracelets as charms it justs makes me melt. Anyway - the whole typewriter is now mine to post a great quote or just admire. Ahhh.

The quote is perfect too - life seems to be pretty heavy right now - but I see God's hand in every part of it. It is so easy to get weighted down with the nitty gritty of life and not see the big picture or the completion of part of God's work in our lives. My sister and minister husband are taking on a huge new adventure, a great leap of faith - but hearing the details, the little things that show God's nod of approval on this bold step - that is so huge, so promising. Worry can do so much damage, faith in God protects us from the damage.

Tonight is going to be really special. Our homeschool group is hosting a Father-Daughter dance. My dh is taking our little dd out to a nice restaurant - just the two of them. Her dress is ready to go, daddy has a matching pink tie - he bought her a dainty little wrist corsage - it is all soooo sweet. I baked and decorated cookies until late into the night. We decorated the church and it is just waiting for special memories to be made. More pictures to come!

Luscious Strawberries

We picked strawberries with our homeschool support group today. What an amazing day it was weather wise! Absolutely perfect. Then the "R" family invited us to come over and make some freezer jam with them. Stephanie (aka Incredimom from the "R" family) made some shortcake biscuits to enjoy with our strawberries for dessert tonight - I didn't have any cool whip for the topping - but isn't it pretty - and so tasty! They also introduced us to something new - Rita's Italian ice - and I am hooked! Another blessed day - thank you Lord for good godly friends, pretty days and so many wonderful foods to enjoy.

So, first we bought a ton of this . . .

And then I said, oh, I like this! and we bought a bunch of that.

But wait, this is so cool! 20 boxes piled high . . .

This looks really clean and nice . . . put that in the car!

AAARGH! and all of that. I say on occasion that I would like to be an interior decorator when I grow up, but I am cured now. No more of that boy. We were going to do this simple update of two bathrooms, not 3, just two. Just replace the countertops & sink downstairs and the same up with the additional floor and tub. No biggie. HA. I laugh at myself. So, in the beginning, I was giddy with excitement, shopping for tile - so much fun! Well, weeks later, it ain't so much. The second guy came to give his quote and input for the work, and he wants me to take back all my thought out purchases and start over. Hmmm.

New Life

The greenness of spring is a wonder to behold. We thoroughly enjoy our screened-in porch this time of year and in the fall. We have to wait until the pollen dies down but then - it is fabulous! Each day the view is a darker, richer green - a new picture all the time. The Lord is so good - how about His giving us such a massive range of greens and not just two or three? How about Him?

Expelled - The Movie

I rarely go to the movie theater - one reason being I am cheap - another being I don't care for most of the films being produced today. We went to see Expelled last Friday and were 3 of the about 20 in the audience. Which is a shame. This film is like a documentary that states scientists today are being punished for even mentioning an Intelligent Design theory of creation. I don't know how biased/stretched this fact is, or if there is more to the story - but the blatant anger and hatred toward Christians by the non-ID believing scientists was a bit eye-opening. That part alone gave me enough to consider. I hope many more homeschoolers and Christians will get out to see this film - it is well worth your time.

Vintage Cream color scheme

Have you ever noticed when you finished a shopping spree that there is sometimes an unintentional similar color theme used throughout your purchases? I hope I am not alone in this strange phenomenon. I pulled out some of my treasures from today's shopping and was shocked to see the same color in 3 of the items! We had such a good time at the Lakewood Antiques Show in Cumming and met the neatest people. One of the best shops was the Ribbon Emporium - vintage ribbon perfectly dyed - displayed so sweetly on little stained clothespins (the non-clip kind) and on old thread spools. She paints/dyes birds too and I just had to buy one for a friend that collects birds. At another booth we purchased some Moda fabric squares for my daughter to begin practicing sewing. On the way home we hit garage sales - dh found a CD - 60 years of Disney containing 25 Disney theme songs for a whopping 50 cents! It was a fun day.

Decorating ideas?

Dh and I work with the college and career class at our church - it is a huge blessing. The church just gave us the former mission house to use as our meeting place and we are thrilled! It was simply decorated when we got it - but much too "flowery" for our young crowd. We have been tossing around ideas - our C&C minister is thinking Starbucks style interior but it is called the Cabin - since it has wood walls and rustic front. One of the gals suggested a cowboy theme. My dh wants to put up a mounted deer head! We have limited (like none) funds for a while - so right now I think paint and simple curtain panels. It would be cool to use some of that magnetic/blackboard paint to have a huge wall for notes and events - frame it with some molding. Sure would love to have some feedback/help! I am thinking a trip to IKEA is needed.

They came today!! My nestabilities dies have finally arrived. It was fun playing with them tonight.

My dd has a friend over for a sleepover and we watched Enchanted - again! Having just been to NY, it was fun watching it trying to recognize the city. The happily ever after stuff is good too - although it bothers me (stepping up on my soapbox now) how Giselle so quickly falls out of love with her perfect prince and in love with Richard. And Richard falls out of love with his longtime (5 years!) girlfriend and in love with Giselle. And to really get nit-pickey about the movie - why did they have to add that shower scene? Did she have to be naked to express there is magical water coming from where - stuff across? (I know you don't see anything, but was it necessary, really?) Sorry, stepping off my soapbox now.

So, for the rest of this sleepover we had to make something fun for dessert to go with the calorie-laden pan pizza we had for dinner. Watching Martha bake up cupcakes all last week put me in that mindset, (the mindset being, I gotta have some!) especially after finding the blog of one of her guests. Her blog has the perfect directions and recipes to make her specialty cupcakes. I, of course, am not smart enough to follow directions and chose to do my own thing because I am a certified chocoholic and even though the recipe calls for red velvet cake mix, well, devil's food will do just as well, no - better, right? Hmmm. Let me say, it is more than this chocoholic can take! It is so rich - well, just too much, that is all. So, follow the directions silly and do it right. The girls had a good time with it, that is what really matters. Rolling the cake mix into balls was messy like playing in the mud - now that is fun. Even if they did keep saying "yuck" and giggling. Ah, the memories.

I am giddy with excitement! Darcy over at Graphically Designing is working diligently to make me a pretty blog. I love her word - blogosphere - she is so creative! You have to check out her work! Planning the big vacation

OK, I now have the bug. It took some work, but there is excitement in the air that cannot be denied. My dh has been planning our Magical Disney vacation for months now. I didn't believe him when he said that we HAD to make our dinner reservations NOW for something that is close to 200 days away - but boy, he was right! (He is so smart, you already know he is wonderful, but he is super smart too.) Our good friends, the "R" family, are going with us, we will have a Grand Gathering together. Today we poured over the calendars, dh's spreadsheets, the websites and then called to make reservations - and some places were already booked solid! Wow. Amazing. I thought my dh was the only person that was this serious about his Disney vacation. Not true, there are many more Disney fanatics out there and they will be at Disney the same time we will be. Our little group definitely qualifies as Disney fanatics. The "R" family has 3 princesses and we are taking one of our princesses. In case you are adding, that makes 6 females and two handsome men to forge the way and lead us on into the most magical, special and exciting vacation of our lives. No pressure guys! We now have reservation numbers for our sit down dinners in place - the itinerary is marked every day as full as can be. (A little too full says my old body and mind.) It makes me want to sing "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Da!" It's magical.

It is becoming apparent that no one is reading this blog - including my sweet dh - because I change the layout almost daily it seems - and nary one comment! People have much more interesting things to do like eat, sleep, work, play or scrapbook as opposed to watching the colors and headers of this blog change. Rightfully so. And seems like most of my family does not like to put their comment on a blog. Understandable. I should be grateful if you read it, not require your time to put in a response to what you read. I could do one of those blog contests - I'll find a wonderful goodie and then draw a winner from the comment section. Or, I could just be content to change the look of this page each week and show it to my ever attentive 10 year old for her sweet "oohh ahhh! that's pretty". How do you spell ooo? Not the ooo as in "yuck" but the ooo as in "nice". You know what I mean. I think a special shopping spree is needed in the near future. Fun!

My best friend (for over 20 years - wow!) and I are rarely able to get together nowadays. But for birthdays and Christmas it is a must. We both love to scrapbook but don't have a lot of time to do it. For my birthday she bought us a scrapbook night at Archivers - they provide dinner, dessert and inspiration. We had so much fun catching up and talking. Plus, I won a door prize! Wow! She also surprised me with one of my favorite cakes - carrot cake - she is an awesome cook, isn't it pretty? - I am sorry you can't taste this, trust me, it is wonderful!! Thank you Vivian!!!

Fabulous Cake

Every time I fix this cake it is a hit. I absolutely love it - it is great with coffee. Not a heavy cake to eat - nice and light with a great flavor! It is my favorite cake to bake and give away - this time it was to thank a church staff for their kind services.

Almond Cream Cheese Pound Cake

1 pkg Butter Recipe Cake Mix
1 pkg. cream cheese, softened
4 eggs
½ cup water
Sugar to taste – up to ½ cup
½ cup vegetable oil
1 ½ tsp. vanilla
1 ½ tsp. Almond flavor

Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour bundt pan. Mix all ingredients in large mixing bowl. Blend with mixer at low speed for 1 minute, stop and scrape sides of bowl. Mix at medium speed for 2 minutes.

Pour into bundt pan and bake 35-40 minutes.

Sweetheart doll babies

My mom had four babies - you'd think she'd had enough - especially since we were all less than 2 years apart! Then she had 12 grand babies! But she collects plastic and composite and bed dolls - while I was at their house I took some pictures - now realize I forgot to take my favorite doll's picture, the one that duplicates the doll she had as a toddler. Anyway, fun to look at and admire. The top picture is her latest addition - she is such a sweetie with her little curl on top. Next time I go I'll get some more pictures to show!!

Birthday cake

We visited both sides of the family for Easter weekend. My mom spoiled us first. She fixed a big wonderful dinner and then - having heard my dh lament that no one bakes layered chocolate cakes anymore - she fixed him one! We then went to my mil's for a huge feast and a previous posted favorite - molten chocolate cake. Can you tell we are chocoholics around here? Yumm! Thanks moms! We heart you!

New York City!

My dh took me away for our "birthday bash" to New York City - we stayed in Times Square! Our birthdays are only a day apart so we do a lot of two-for-one celebrating!! This was such a special trip, I will remember it always. It was a bit of a downer (well, for me it was) when we couldn't do the Martha Stewart TV show taping because of the dates we were there - but we got in lots of sightseeing, a Club 21 dinner, a broadway show and a Big East game at Madison Square Garden. I bought some knock-offs in Chinatown - that Tiffany necklace looks real to me! We figured out how New Yorkers tie their scarves in that cool way. We ate Junior's fabulous cheesecake! But the cool thing that happened was, on our way to the airport we decided to go by Macy's Flower Show and guess who was the guest of honor! Martha! Yep, I got to see her live and in person. Cool.
